2019 Hyundai Kona -Electric SUV.

Author: Sudhanshu Raghav

Hyundai has launched the country's first all-electric SUV- the Kona. The carmaker is planning to bring 23 electric cars globally by 2025 .Kona is a first step by  Hyundai to showcase its electric car 's technological  capabilities in India. The car is priced at 25.03 lakh(ex-showroom , India) and will be sold in selected 11 cities via 15 Hyundai dealerships. The Kona looks like a compact SUV , considering Hyundai showcase it as an SUV.

DESIGN:

Exterior:

From front the Kona gets a sleek headlamps with LED projector setup. Since there is no grille in the car , the space is designed neatly and house the charging port inside. It gets 17-inch wheels with smart design which improves aerodynamics of the car, resulting in improved efficiency. Hyundai has given this car certain elements which makes it rugged looking car like roof rails, body cladding and high ground clearance of about 172mm. Kona has longer wheelbase and is wider than Creta but 4,180mm of length and short height makes it look like i20 active.

Interior:

Step inside and car seems familiar as lot has been taken from other Hyundai's offerings. Quality of materials used inside is good and the cabin feels well built. Dashboard is soft to touch but there are some parts which are made up of hard plastic. The steering and some of the switches comes from latest car in the lot  the Venue SUV. But, one thing which Kona does not get like Venue is the Blue Link sim based connectivity which is surprising at this price point and the futuristic image the car carries. Car is practical  with lots of storage spaces on offer. Just like Honda CRV the Kona gets buttons to select gears which adds further space in the centre console. The driver side seat can be adjusted electrically and both the front seats gets ventilation system , with a heating function too. Sunroof increase the airy feel inside the car , but due to its short height the headroom is not much for tall passengers .

Rear seats are designed well and there is headrest for middle passenger as well. Due to the raised floor height , in order to accomodate battery pack beneath , knees gets in a bit up-position. Legroom is not that great for tall passengers and low seating position can make it difficult to sit during long journeys. It gets 332- litre boot space which is enough to load suitable luggage.
